Senior Resource Roundtable

Mission of the Senior Resource Roundtable:   Unite agencies that work with seniors in the Cape Fear Area by building collaboratives, sharing resources and information, and encouraging best practices.

Yasmin Tomkinson ytomkinson@cfliteracy.org Cape Fear Literacy Council   910-251-0911 Cape Fear Literacy Council provides free-of-charge educational support to adults through one-on-one tutoring, small classes, and a computer lab. We have two programs: Adult Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). All adult learners are assessed and provided with skill books/materials at the appropriate level. We provide training for volunteers to become certified tutors. Each year, about 10% of our students are seniors, as are almost 50% of our volunteers.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is America's largest volunteer network for people age 55 and over. NHC RSVP provides meaningful volunteer opportunities for persons age 55 and better to use thei life experience and skills to participate more fully in the life of their community through significant volunteer service.

NHC Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) provides loving and experienced tutors and mentors to children and youth with special needs.

Beth Wooten bwooten@nhcgov.com Foster Grandparent Volunteer Program   910-798-6408 Foster Grandparent Volunteers are seniors 55+ who mentor and tutor at-risk children in pre-schools, schools and after school programs. They give 20 hours of their time per week and 80 hours of their time per month helping children to succeed in school and in life. FGP Volunteers help children learn to read, provide one-on-one tutoring and guide children at a critical time in their lives.
